Game 918: SteveSmith, Narts, wonderhero, Deadlime in SNAFU: The Assassins*

- Why did we decide to award 50 points to the player who kills the last Assassin? I can't remember?
It doesn't seem right -
Wonderhero killed 3 Assassins and loses. I killed 2 Assassins. Narts killed 1 Assassin and wins.
Sorry to be questioning the glory of your victory Narts, you won fair. But by the time the last Assassin is killed everyone usually knows who the Assassin player is and most of the hard work has been done. Am I the only one thinking the player who kills the last Assassin is mostly down to luck? Posted by

- In this game I'll admit it was luck, in the earlier snafu games I think the last kill rule actually added more strategy, at least into my plans... There is an art to trying to kill all the targets on the same turn and at the same time trying to make it harder to pull off for the others, by blocking access routes and defending the assassins/saboteurs tactically so as to make sure the last one of them will be at a secure place where it's easy for you to kill him when the time comes. It makes it a bit more complicated affair than just everyone rushing to kill the assassins as fast as they can and gives slightly more of a fighting chance for the assassins even after discovered.
But yeah still I would agree it is a pretty strange rule. Posted by

- I think (IIRC) we changed it to be like that so that even when one player had killed most of the assassins, there was still some way for another player to win. You're right, it doesn't seem entirely fair, but in this case the VPs not won by Narts were split between Deadlime and Wonderhero, meaning neither of them had enough to overtake Narts. Still, I'm open to suggestions on how we can change this for future games.

- Thanks Narts, my experience of this particular SNAFU mission is quite limited. I do now see what you mean now about it possibly adding a bit more strategy in that sense. But from my own point of view of being the player the Assassin was trying to kill, I didn't really have the option of not killing any Assassins within view. If I didn't kill them, I knew they were going to kill me, so I didn't have the option of strategically biding my time.
If that's the case I think this '50 points for the last unit' rule could be a particular disadavntage for the 'wanted' side. Posted by

- Ah yeah, that was it, I remember now. :)
Nothing springs to mind about how to improve this mission at the moment, but I don't really think I'm a huge fan of how it currently stands. Posted by

- I've never played it, but "SNAFU: The Assassins 2" sounds a lot more fun and evenly balanced. :)

- Yes it's strange rule but with a high strategy level. It's interesting.
That's why I didn't want to kill Steve's #5 and #6 in my turn, especially when Nart could see what I was doing. I knew that Dealime heard the shots and he will know who is the assassin. So I tried to conceal this from Narts even one turn, thinking he didn't know yet. So I set the opportunity fire vs Steve to pass next Nart's turn. But the things got complicated.
Also I saw that death grenade could easy penalize me. Posted by

- Anyway, I assume you knew it was me cos you saw me go up through the door at the bottom-left and then Deadlime's unit was shot dead?
Once I realised I'd been discovered, the combination of Wonderhero's death grenades and the fact that one of Narts men was blocking the only doorway out of the centre (trapping two of my men) meant my downfall was assured... Posted by

- I think you're right: the tactic for the non-assassins is not only to kill the assassins, but try and do it without the other non-assassins discovering who the assassins are. (Maybe there's a more succint way of saying that).

- I heard the death shot and scanner showed me the location of shooter and I knew very sure from the previous turn that only you and Deadlime was in that room.
So I did't want to kill your #1 with my #2 because Deadlime could see this. But I wounded your #1 with my #6 witch was hidden from Deadlime view.
Because I wasn't sure if Deadlime knew who is the assasin between me and you Steve, listening only that death shot.
My question is: Did the console let Deadlime know who is the shooter if he see only the bullet and target ? Posted by

- I wonder if it's worth changing Snafu missions so that weapons don't make a sound. It's hard enough for the assassins to find a location where they can shoot in secret, but taking into account noise radius makes it nigh-on impossible to assasinate discretely.

- Sounds like there be a market for a new weapon type or two... guns with silencers... ninja stars... bows and arrows...
