I think newbie players should not affect faction troop numbers when joining a faction. The difference between Hokunda and a newbie is so vast as to be of cosmic dimensions. So a newbie can join the Campaign and either graduated by playing the right number of games or is voted /recognised by the regular veteran players that they have arrived. eg Henoh and Henry's Cat are no longer newbie grunts. But Delta is still working up from a new recruit to regular player status. If we don't have this and the kicking/boot idea the Campaign doesn't work so well due mostly to the number of players. I think Steve your set up works well if we had 50 plus players but with fewer active members the Campaign is much more sensitive to imbalances. I think if a new player has to earn their rank it can only increase their sense of acheivement and belonging.
Pete and I have discussed this and we are one of the same mind. I would like to add that I think that before a player signs to a faction they should have won/played a certain number of games. This stops complete newbies joining, playing a few games, very likely losing and then not play anymore while taking up unit allocation.
Yeah! Not only do I think it's a necessary idea we need now I know this is important for the future of the Campaign. And it's not just about keeping us old hands happy but it affects future new players. If these problems are resolved sucessfully I believe we should attract and keep more players.
Marsec Corp. Maybe I shouldn't say this but in the interests of fair competitiveness (sportsmanship) you have 8 players in your team! Most are not playing. How many of thoses duds are costing you unit allocation!
Is unit allocation still a problem? We have 40-50 units each now IIRC. Surely enough for anyone! :) BTW, a player must have played at least 4 games (not including conceded games) before they can join a faction. I can bump this up if needed?
Yes that's enough Steve. But looking at some of the factions there is a lot of players who aren't playing. According to the equation you set, that must mean lower units for those that do.
Perhaps, just a suggestion, set a time limit where if a faction member doesn't play he is kicked off. Two weeks?
Personally I want 50 troops minimum to cover games without any cuts lower. So 40 -50 is a problem for me to meet demand. As for player experience I would like players to have at least 50 games under their belts and really over a 100. Or have like I suggested before that a newbie can play but it doesn't affect troop allocation numbers. So a probation/training peroid. I prefer the training peroid idea but if it's how many games a player has then it should more like a 100 games. Having a player in your faction who doesn't understand how to use op fire, grenade timings etc up against FoN, me, Hokunda is just silly. If a newbie comes in with talent or experience from other gaming you can always make an executive decision if such a situation ever arises. I think the Campaign should be pitched as the hardcore gaming arena that it is and intice new players to work a bit to join in. Make them want it, and there's nothing more than that a bit of healthy exclusion to make people interested.
Maybe increase the number of games a player must have won before they can join a faction? Ten or 20? Maybe more to limit it to regular/experienced players?
igoryan is on about 50 full game wins and I considered him to be good enough as an opponent awhile ago. Probably lethal by now! So yeah 20 would do it. The only downside is if newbies join up fighting newbie friends can qualify easily but a booting/kick out facility could take care of that I guess.
Ah, I've only spotted this discussion now. I agree to the new level of needing to win a certain number of games. I've been pretty impressed by Delta, he lost a lot of games initially, but to his credit seems to be putting up a good fight against veteran players now. Still, I think it would do no harm at all in having an initial bar to players joining the campaign.

Regarding troop numbers, I have 40 so am almost never short of fighters. Though Marsec has something like 8 players. It only seems to be me and Delta playing. Trolly and Agent Orange have been chipping in occasionally, while some new players played some games and presumably lost, so perhaps dropped out. Maybe it's worth having two league tables? Veterans and minnows? I think for the new players it might be a little discouraging meeting e.g. a blitz from explosives specialists like Rabid on their first game ;-) Or simply being out manoeuvred red and losing

There are already a few different league tables, hidden away at http://www.stellarforces.com/dsr/otherleagues.cls . There's a separate league for those with < 200 games and those with more. I should maybe make it a bit more prominent.
It would be good to make more of the different leagues. Maybe have some new league tables to focus and keep track of group tournaments or based around a set of missions. The Colonisation missions could have a league table of their own to track the best wins and progress. A mini Colonisation Campaign or tournanent could be developed around it.
