You need to take a look at the map generator for that game again. While this time the units were a distance from the exit, the aliens started off in one corner and had no chance to get to anyone before they had all escaped.
Might want to ensure there are multiple routes from start to end for each team, or put the aliens toward the middle, and have the other team start on opposite side of the map (Kind of like the new Escort map).
Not sure if anyone else has had a fair game on that game type, but the three I played haven't been. ;)

Yes, it has been more like a race, no possible tactic but run.
I think you're right, the escape mission needs a lot of tweaking as it's way too random in what advantage/disadvantage each side has. I've removed it from the options for the time being.
I think I'll make the map a fixed layout, and use something like your second idea. i.e. put the aliens in the middle, and put the other team and escape hatch on opposite sides (but random opposite sides).
