I've been thinking of replacing these forums with something like phpBB, maybe to give them a more professional feel. Does anyone think that's a good or bad idea?

I don't mind either way to be honest. The forums here do the job - but I suppose they could be better too. If you replaced them with something else, would users need to register twice - for both this SF site and for the forums seperately? I know it sounds petty but I'm often quite reluctant to register for things unless I'm fairly certain about wanting to use them. It wouldn't be a problem for me now, but I'm talking about keeping things simple and easy for new users to be able to join in with minimal hassle.
Yes, I'd definitely configure it so that users only had to register once, just like the wiki is now. I think I'll create the new forums and see what happens. Having to register for everything is a pain. Trying to publicise SF on various websites and forums means I have to register for loads of them. :(
