It's been mentioned a few times that the campign needs a bit of a re-design. One thought occurred to me: how about "borrowing" some mechanics from board games? These are usually played in a similar way to TBS games (well, they *are* TBS games). Off the top of my head, Risk would be a potential candidate (although I wouldn't neccessarily want to use that since I've played it to death). Has anybody else played a board game that has some mechanics that could be transposed to sci-fi universe?
I haven't really played many strategy board games. A couple like World In Flames over 20 years ago and of course Risk.
Space Hulk I have played on the PC which was orginally a board game.
World in Flames had some game mechanic (can't remember the specifics) to try and replicate the German Blitzkrieg so it rewards success to keep a momentum going. This would help stop stalemates - trench warfare. How you do that I'm not entirely sure. Perhaps once you have taken a sector you can attack at least one neighbouring sector much quicker so rather than 7 days for your opponent to defend it they just have 3 days or lose it. And so on.
I'm all for amending the game. I love board games so welcome that approach too. But it's been so long since I've played any I'm not going to have much input for a proposed methodology.
The campaign mode is in the ballpark of being brilliant, but somehow always seems to become a grind. It feels like it just needs speeding up... Not sure how!
